The Assassin's Route

Milestone levels, the perk to take, and the work to do. Between milestones: travel dark, brew often, and let Sneak train itself.

Build guide: this route promises the build and its story, not 100% of Skyrim. The Lockout Ledger on the overview audits everything it routes through.

Levels 1-10 - The Border Ghost

LevelPick / targetActivityDone
1No perk yetHelgen -> the shadows
Escape Helgen quietly where possible, pick the Thief Stone at the Guardian Stones, and reach Riverwood. Sell what is heavy, keep what is sharp.
2Stealth 1 SneakFirst tools
Buy or take a hunting bow and a dagger in Riverwood. Sneak everywhere from now on; the skill trains itself while you travel.
3Overdraw 1 ArcheryBleak Falls, her way
Clear Bleak Falls Barrow for Riverwood: bow from the dark, one bandit at a time. The draugr teach patience.Every kill unseen. If the room wakes, back into a corridor and let them come to the arrow.
4Stealth 2 SneakFirst poisons
Pick everything that grows on the road, eat one of each new ingredient to learn effects, and brew the first Damage Health poisons at the Riverwood alchemy lab.
5Alchemist 1 AlchemyThe Whiterun detour
Deliver the claw and the Dragonstone; take the bounty work Whiterun offers a stranger. Buy Muffle boots money allows, or start saving.
6Overdraw 2 ArcheryWestern Watchtower
The dragon changes the plan: fight it with the guards, from range, and absorb what comes after. The Greybeards call; the summons can wait a few levels.
7Muffled Movement SneakQuiet feet
With armour noise halved, night work opens up. Take a Whiterun favour or two; practise lifting light items from sleeping targets, saving first.
8Novice/Apprentice Illusion IllusionThe first spell
Buy Muffle from Farengar (or the Riverwood trader’s stock luck) and cast it on the road; Illusion trains itself while you walk.
9Alchemist 2 AlchemyThe poison bench
Deathbell grows around Morthal’s roads and Salt is everywhere: Slow poisons join the kit. Sell the surplus; poison money is bow money.
10Eagle Eye ArcheryThe road to Riften
Travel to Riften on foot, working bounties and word walls along the way. Brynjolf will find her in the market; hear him out.

Zaria-do now

Where she is
  • Riverwood to Whiterun to the long road east, learning Skyrim’s dark the way she learned Elsweyr’s: by walking it at night with Night Eye up.
Combat
  • Open every fight from hiding at range; the 2x bow multiplier is her baseline damage plan.
  • Draugr wake in groups: pull with one arrow and hold a doorway when they do.
  • Keep a dagger drawn indoors; a 3x close-quarters strike beats reloading a bow at arm’s length.
Craft and economy
  • Eat one of each new ingredient; known effects are money at the bench.
  • Deathbell + Salt Pile is her first professional poison; brew and sell the copies.
  • Tempering the hunting bow at any grindstone stretches its life cheaply.
Roleplay
  • She pays Riverwood back for the escape gear before she leaves; debts are the code.
  • Night Eye at dusk, always; a cat who cannot see deserves what finds her.
  • She does not speak of Elsweyr, but she leaves coins at Khajiit caravan fires.

Levels 11-25 - Guild Work

LevelPick / targetActivityDone
11Deadly Aim SneakA Chance Arrangement
Join the Thieves Guild through Brynjolf’s market job. The 3x bow multiplier arrives with the trade.Guild jobs want no bodies. Ghost them: it is both the pay grade and her code.
12Light Foot SneakLoud and Clear, quietly
Goldenglow without a single kill: Muffle, shadows, the sewer exit. Pressure plates stop existing this level.
13Agile Defender 1 Light ArmorGuild armour
Tonilia’s set is the working uniform: light, quiet, and fenced-in pockets. Custom Fit comes later; noise discipline matters more.
14Alchemist 3 AlchemyDampened Spirits
Maven’s work in Whiterun. Between jobs, Niruin trains Archery and the poison bench funds it.
15Critical Shot 1 ArcheryThe numbers game
Radiant Guild jobs (Vex and Delvin) in whichever cities they offer. Five each unlocks the city influence work later; do them as they come.
16Backstab SneakThe dagger, formally
Sneak attacks with one-handers hit 6x now. Buy an elven or better dagger and start finishing what the bow opens.Melee sneak attacks give 12x the Sneak XP of arrows: the dagger is also the trainer.
17Cutpurse 1 PickpocketScoundrel’s Folly
Gulum-Ei in Solitude. The long walk west is bounty and word-wall country; work it.
18Poisoner AlchemySharper vials
Poisons 25% stronger. Weakness-to-poison brews join the kit for hard targets.
19Apprentice Illusion + Quiet Casting path IllusionThe College visit
Enrol at Winterhold (First Lessons); she is here for the Illusion trainers and spell stock, not the politics. Drevis sells and trains.
20Silent Roll SneakThe Pursuit
Mercer’s betrayal remakes the Guild. Karliah’s path runs through Snow Veil Sanctum: bow first, dagger second, always from the dark.
22Assassin's Blade SneakFifteen times
The dagger becomes the art: 15x from hiding. Blackreach, Mercer, the whole endgame of the Guild line answers to it.Hard save before Blindsighted’s finale.
24Unhindered Light ArmorDarkness Returns
Return the Skeleton Key. A thief who keeps a crutch stops being an artist; it goes back to Nocturnal.
25Custom Fit Light ArmorGuild Master
Finish the city influence jobs and take the Guild. The Tribute Chest and fence network fund everything that follows.

Zaria-do now

Where she is
  • Riften’s Ratway and the Flagon between jobs, with working trips to Whiterun, Markarth, Solitude, and Windhelm as Vex and Delvin assign them.
Combat
  • Frostbite spiders and skeevers in the Ratway are poison practice, both directions.
  • Falmer in Blackreach do not use eyes: light means nothing, noise means everything. Walk.
  • Dwemer machines ignore Illusion and poison alike; the tempered bow does the talking there.
Craft and economy
  • Fence limits, not merchant gold, cap her income: Guild progress raises them.
  • Enchanting starts here: disenchant everything Muffle or Fortify she finds.
  • Niruin (Archery) and Vex (Lockpicking) train in-house; the trainer gold stays in the family.
Roleplay
  • No kills on Guild work: the code and the contract agree for once.
  • She learns every face in the Flagon; information is an assassin’s first weapon.
  • The Skeleton Key goes back. Some tools cost more than they open.

Levels 26-40 - The Old Ways

LevelPick / targetActivityDone
26Adept Illusion IllusionInnocence Lost
Aventus Aretino’s prayer. Grelod meets the code’s test easily; the child’s contract is taken. Then sleep. The kidnapping that follows is the door in.
27Quiet Casting IllusionWith Friends Like These...
The Abandoned Shack. Astrid’s test conflicts with the code; her list, her choice, and the Brotherhood watches either way. Join to judge them from inside.Safeguard: do NOT kill Astrid; that destroys the questline this arc exists for.
28Concentrated Poison AlchemySanctuary contracts
The early contracts, done her way: unseen, poisoned, professional. Two hits per vial changes the bench maths.
30Power Shot ArcheryThe Silence Has Been Broken
Amaund Motierre’s offer reaches the Sanctuary. The Emperor. The code has never been tested like this.Hard save at Volunruud.
32Kindred Mage IllusionBound Until Death
The wedding in Solitude. A public kill against every instinct she has; do it clean, from stone and shadow, and vanish.
34Hypnotic Gaze IllusionA Cure for Madness
Cicero’s trail. The code speaks: the jester’s crimes are the Brotherhood’s own business, and she was not hired. Spare him.Permanent either way; hard save first.
36Critical Shot 2 ArcheryHail Sithis!
The Emperor, the true one, aboard the Katariah. Whatever she tells herself afterwards, the Shrouded Gloves earned here double Backstab and Assassin’s Blade: 30x.The gloves matter mechanically; wearing them is a choice her code gets to argue about.
38Enchanter 3 EnchantingThe Sanctuary rebuilt
Take the Torturer... no. Take the leadership, rebuild Dawnstar Sanctuary, and run it her way: contracts reviewed, innocents refused.
40Aspect of Terror IllusionThe audit
Guild Master and Listener both. Audit the kit: tempered weapons, two Muffle sources, a full poison bench, Illusion at working strength.

Zaria-do now

Where she is
  • Between Falkreath Sanctuary, Dawnstar, and wherever the contracts point, with Riften as the banking stop.
Combat
  • Frenzy turns contract complications into bystander stories: cast from hiding, let rooms solve themselves.
  • The 30x glove-dagger one-shots almost anything that bleeds at this level on Adept.
  • Penitus Oculatus agents hunt in pairs late in the arc; poison the first, Frenzy the second.
Craft and economy
  • Contract pay plus fence capacity makes gold irrelevant; buy every Illusion tome Drevis stocks.
  • Enchant the working set: Muffle boots, Fortify Sneak, Fortify Archery, Fortify Alchemy rotation.
  • Babette trains Alchemy to expert; the irony of paying a 300-year-old child is not lost on her.
Roleplay
  • Every contract gets the question: does this one deserve it? The route assumes yes was checked.
  • Cicero lives. Mercy is not weakness when it is chosen.
  • She writes no names down. The list lives where lists are safe.

Levels 41-52 - Louder Shadows

LevelPick / targetActivityDone
41Steady Hand 1 ArcheryThe Greybeards, at last
Climb the steps. The Voice sits oddly on an assassin, but Aura Whisper and Whirlwind Sprint are tools her trade understands.
43Rage IllusionElder Knowledge
The main quest through Alduin’s Wall and the Throat of the World. Paarthurnax is not on her list and never will be.Refuse the Blades when they demand him; that door closes on them, not her.
45Extra Effect path (Enchanter 5) EnchantingDawnguard
Isran’s call. Side with the Dawnguard at Dimhollow; Serana joins regardless, and the crossbow enters the kit.Hard save at the Bloodline choice.
47Quick Shot ArcheryThe Soul Cairn and the Vale
Dawnguard’s middle: a dead world and a hidden one, both full of things Illusion cannot touch until 90. The bow carries these.
49Agile Defender 3 Light ArmorKindred Judgment
Harkon falls to a fully drawn ambush: Marked for Death, strongest poison, Assassin’s Blade from behind Auriel’s light.
51Steady Hand 2 ArcheryAlduin
Sovngarde. Some contracts serve everyone; this one was free. Dragonrend, the bow, and the honoured dead.
52Matching Set Light ArmorThe audit II
Main quest done, Dawnguard done. Illusion sits near 90; the crossbow is tempered; magic resistance is stacking (Lord Stone next trip past it).

Zaria-do now

Where she is
  • High Hrothgar to Fort Dawnguard, the Soul Cairn, the Forgotten Vale, and Sovngarde: the loud years.
Combat
  • Dragons cannot be sneak-attacked out of the sky: Steady Hand, stagger with Power Shot on landings, poison the grounded head.
  • Gargoyles and Death Hounds hunt by senses Illusion does bend: Fear works where arrows are slow.
  • Enhanced crossbow bolts ignore half of armour; Falmer heavies in the Vale notice the difference.
Craft and economy
  • Serana is company she did not ask for and keeps anyway; the first since Elsweyr.
  • Sunhallowed arrows from Gelebor reward keeping Auriel’s Bow drawn.
  • Extra Effect lands this band: Muffle+Fortify Sneak boots are the signature piece.
Roleplay
  • She tells Serana one true story about Elsweyr, and no more.
  • Paarthurnax lives; her list has never held a name that taught the world mercy.
  • Sovngarde shakes her: a hall for warriors, and no word of where quiet blades go.

Levels 53-65 - Mistress of the Art

LevelPick / targetActivityDone
53Master of the Mind path IllusionDragonborn
The cultists find her first, which she finds professionally embarrassing. Sail to Solstheim.
55Master of the Mind IllusionThe draugr answer
Illusion 90: undead, daedra, and machines join the audience. The crypts of Solstheim stop being bow-only country.
57Bullseye ArcheryMiraak’s temple and the Black Books
Work the Dragonborn main line. Apocrypha rewards patience and punishes noise: her home ground, in a wrong-angled way.Hard save before each Black Book choice.
60Silence SneakAt the Summit of Apocrypha
Miraak ends. The Dragonborn arc rewards Seeker of Shadows (Sneak, Alchemy, Light Armor boosted): take it.
62Deft Movement Light ArmorThe long tail
Solstheim side content, remaining word walls, the Shadow Stone or Aetherial Crown project (Lost to the Ages), and any Creation content that suits a quiet blade.
65Shadow Warrior SneakThe complete assassin
Sneak 100. The final audit: every branch of the art at working strength: bow, dagger, poison, Illusion, and the discipline that binds them. The build is done; Skyrim is hers to walk.Milestones page has the full checklist of what "done" means.

Zaria-do now

Where she is
  • Raven Rock, the ash wastes, Apocrypha, and finally wherever she pleases: Skyrim by night, on her own terms.
Combat
  • Ash spawn are poison-immune-adjacent and Illusion-late; the crossbow line earns its keep on Solstheim.
  • Seekers and Lurkers fall to Master of the Mind like anything else with a mind to bend.
  • Miraak steals dragon souls mid-fight; do not panic, finish the phases.
Craft and economy
  • Stalhrim light armour with frost enchantments suits a cat far from home; the smithing detour is worth it once.
  • The Black Star plus a Soul Trap dagger keeps the enchanting bench fed forever.
  • Money stopped mattering bands ago; now it buys houses she rarely sleeps in.
Roleplay
  • She keeps a room in Raven Rock; Elsweyr’s old ways came from ash country too.
  • The Ebony Blade whispers from Dragonsreach; she leaves it there. Some artefacts want the wrong version of her.
  • The contract she fled is still out there. The route ends; the story does not.
