Her art

Short answer

Enemies compute a detection value from the light on you, direct line of sight, your distance, your movement speed, and your noise, with equipped armour weight feeding the noise term. Your Sneak skill does not make you quieter or darker; it reduces how good the noticer effectively is. That framing tells you what actually works: shadows, distance, slow movement, and Muffle beat any amount of crouching in torchlight.

Why it matters

  • Every stealth playstyle, an unarmoured assassin or a muffled warrior, rises and falls on the same detection inputs; learn them once and every infiltration in the game becomes legible.
  • Understanding what each tool cancels (Muffle: noise; Invisibility: sight; shadows: light) stops you wasting perks and enchantments on the wrong problem.

Key mechanics

  • Detection inputs: light on you, line of sight (a defined vision cone), distance (attenuates sharply), movement speed, equipped armour weight (noise), and the sounds of spells, shouts, and weapon swings.
  • Your Sneak skill and the Stealth perks reduce the noticer's effective skill, not your sound or visual signature.
  • Muffled Movement (Sneak 30) halves armour noise; Silence (Sneak 70) removes walking and running from detection entirely. A Muffle enchantment on boots does the same job for one enchanting session.
  • Invisibility is powerful but only blinds: enemies still hear you, and interacting with anything (attacking, looting, opening a door) breaks the effect.
  • The glow of a readied spell in your hands makes you more visible; enchantment auras do not.
  • Pickpocket chance is displayed but capped at 90%; nothing pushes past it, so a 10% failure risk always exists. Item weight, gold value, target awareness, and Fortify Pickpocket feed the displayed number.

Practical examples

  • Interior jobs: walk, never run; hug shadows; wait for patrol gaps at corners; douse or avoid lit braziers rather than fighting the light.
  • Heavy or noisy gear: muffled boots plus patience makes even a warrior serviceable at night work; Ebony Mail (from Boethiah's quest) carries a built-in muffle.
  • Pickpocket training: many light items from sleeping or isolated targets beats one heavy prize; save before anything expensive.
  • Trainer trick: gold paid to a trainer who can be pickpocketed can be lifted back, a legitimate mechanic that suits a shadow-network roleplay.

Common mistakes

  • Buying damage perks to fix detection; noise and light are the problem, and Muffle and shadows solve them.
  • Treating Invisibility as silence; a potion mid-combat does nothing about the noise you make sprinting.
  • Trusting a 90% pickpocket chance as safe; over ten lifts, a failure is expected. Save first.
  • Sneaking with a shout or spell mid-fight and wondering why everyone turned; casting noise is a detection input.

For Zaria-do

Zaria-do lives inside this system. Khajiit Night Eye (usable many times per day) removes the light problem in dark interiors, and her light gear keeps the noise term low from level 1. Her rule: if a job cannot be done unseen, the plan is wrong, not the skill.

Short answer

A sneak attack happens when you strike someone unaware of your presence, and it multiplies the weapon's physical damage by a factor set by weapon type and perks. Bows start at 2x and reach 3x with Deadly Aim; swords, maces, and axes start at 3x and reach 6x with Backstab; daggers start at 3x, reach 6x with Backstab, and 15x with Assassin's Blade. Certain Dark Brotherhood gloves double the perk multipliers again, taking daggers to 30x.

Why it matters

  • The multipliers are why stealth combat scales so hard: a modest dagger at 15x out-hits a legendary greatsword swung openly.
  • They also shape the whole build: the bow opens fights at range, but the dagger's ceiling is five times higher, so closing quietly for the kill is mechanically rewarded, not just flavour.

  • The multiplier applies to the weapon's physical damage as shown in your inventory, so Smithing improvements multiply too; enchantment damage on the weapon does not.
  • Sneak skill XP from a successful sneak attack is flat per attack, and melee sneak attacks give 12x the skill XP of ranged ones, so the dagger levels Sneak dramatically faster than the bow.
  • The one-shot threshold is about damage before the target's armour; a poisoned first strike (see Poisons) closes the gap on hard targets.

Practical examples

  • Standard room clear: open with a bow shot on the furthest target, then close quietly with the dagger while the survivors search where the arrow came from.
  • Levelling Sneak: dagger sneak attacks on tough-but-safe targets are the fastest legitimate skill gain in the tree, thanks to the 12x melee XP weighting.
  • Boss openers: strongest poison on the dagger, Assassin's Blade strike, then fight whatever remains at a huge head start.

Common mistakes

  • Judging the dagger by its listed damage; at 15x, base damage differences between daggers matter far more than they look, and tempering multiplies through.
  • Expecting enchantment damage to multiply; only the physical number does, so a raw tempered dagger can out-sneak-attack a flashy enchanted one.
  • Skipping Backstab on a bow build; the route to Deadly Aim passes it anyway, and a 6x melee finisher is the answer when someone walks up on your position.

For Zaria-do

This table is her build. The bow's 3x opens every fight; Assassin's Blade at 15x is the promotion from archer to assassin, and the Dark Brotherhood's Shrouded Gloves double it to 30x, gear she has complicated feelings about wearing. Melee sneak attacks feeding 12x Sneak XP is why her dagger work levels the skill fastest.

Short answer

Poisons are brewed like potions but applied to a weapon, where they trigger on striking. By default one application lasts one hit, so poisons are burst tools: you stack a strong effect onto the strike that matters, usually the opening sneak attack. The Concentrated Poison perk (Alchemy 60) doubles that to two hits, and Poisoner (Alchemy 30) makes your brews 25% stronger. A darker delivery exists too: reverse-pickpocketing a poison into a target's inventory.

Why it matters

  • Poison damage ignores armour entirely; against heavily armoured targets it can be worth more than the weapon's own hit.
  • For a stealth character the maths compounds: multiplier on the physical hit plus a full poison on top makes the opening strike the whole fight plan.
  • Poison effects like Paralysis and Damage Magicka are control, not just damage: a paralysed target is a free second strike.

Key mechanics

  • One application, one hit, by default; Concentrated Poison (Alchemy 60) makes it two. Application survives sheathing but is spent on the next connecting strike.
  • Poisoner (Alchemy 30) adds 25% magnitude to poisons you mix; Alchemy skill and Fortify Alchemy gear scale magnitude further, exactly like potions.
  • Poison XP follows potion value like the rest of Alchemy: expensive multi-effect poisons (Damage Health + Slow + Weakness combos) level the skill and hit harder.
  • Reverse pickpocketing a poison into someone's pockets applies it to them; it is a crime if seen, and success runs through the normal Pickpocket rules and its 90% cap.

  • Boss opener: strongest Damage Health poison on the dagger, sneak-attack, and let the multiplier and the poison resolve together.
  • Deathbell + Salt Pile is a cheap early Slow poison; River Betty appears in Damage Health recipes that punch far above their ingredient cost.
  • Paralysis brews (Canis Root + Imp Stool + Swamp Fungal Pod) turn a missed one-shot into a grounded target and a free follow-up.
  • Farm your own supply: Hearthfire garden ingredients and a habit of picking everything keep the poison bench stocked without gold.

Common mistakes

  • Spending a strong poison on trash fights; one application is one hit, so save the good brews for the strikes that decide fights.
  • Forgetting the poison is already spent and wondering where the damage went; re-apply after each poisoned hit unless perked for two.
  • Ignoring weakness effects; a Weakness to Poison first hit followed by the real poison is dramatically more damage than two plain hits.
  • Reverse-pickpocket assassinations without a save; the 90% pickpocket cap means a visible failure and a bounty are always possible.

Short answer

Illusion manipulates minds rather than dealing damage. For a stealth character it does three jobs: mobility (Muffle, Invisibility), crowd control (Calm, Fear), and offence by proxy (Frenzy, which turns a room of enemies on each other while you watch from the shadows). The catch is that every mind-affecting spell has a maximum target level, and the school's perks exist to raise those caps.

Why it matters

  • Frenzy is the answer to the stealth build's worst situation, a crowded room that cannot be picked apart one arrow at a time: cast it from hiding and the room solves itself.
  • Quiet Casting (Illusion 50) makes ALL your spells from every school silent to others, which is what lets magic coexist with stealth at all.
  • Casting Muffle on yourself levels Illusion steadily anywhere, making this one of the easiest schools to train without combat.

Key mechanics

  • Mind-affecting spells (Calm, Fear, Frenzy, Courage line) fail silently against targets above their level cap; the listed cap is the system to respect.
  • Perks raise the caps: Animage (20) for animals, Kindred Mage (40) for people, and the per-effect perks (Hypnotic Gaze for Calm, Aspect of Terror for Fear, Rage for Frenzy) stack cumulatively with them.
  • Master of the Mind (Illusion 90) extends Illusion to undead, daedra, and automatons, the three families that normally ignore it entirely.
  • Illusion Dual Casting overcharges effects, which in practice means higher effective level caps per cast.
  • Casting higher-tier spells gives faster skill XP; Muffle self-casts are the classic quiet training loop.

  • Bandit camp too big to snipe: Quiet Casting + dual-cast Frenzy into the middle, stay hidden, then finish the last one standing with a sneak attack.
  • Caught mid-dungeon with no shadows: Invisibility, reposition, and re-enter stealth on your terms rather than fighting the alarm.
  • Training: cast Muffle while walking between objectives; the school levels itself and the spell is one you genuinely want active anyway.
  • A follower complicates Frenzy plans: frenzied enemies will also attack them, so send the follower back before the pull or pick the Calm line instead.

Common mistakes

  • Casting Frenzy at a boss five levels above the cap and concluding the school is weak; check the cap, take the perks, dual-cast.
  • Skipping Quiet Casting and having every Invisibility cast advertise your position; the sound is a detection input.
  • Forgetting draugr and Dwemer machines are immune until Master of the Mind; in those dungeons the bow and dagger stay primary.
  • Levelling Illusion with combat spells in the open; Muffle self-casts are safer, faster, and free of witnesses.

For Zaria-do

Illusion is the art she perfects in Skyrim: Muffle on the road (free training), Quiet Casting at 50 so the College's tricks never betray her position, and Frenzy for the rooms one arrow cannot solve. Master of the Mind waits at 90 for the draugr crypts that ignore her otherwise.

Craft and economy

The Crafting LoopSmithing, Enchanting, Alchemy, and how they feed each otherAlchemy brews potions that strengthen Enchanting; Enchanting makes gear that strengthens Alchemy and Smithing; Smithing turns it all into weapons and armour. One honest cycle is enough.

Short answer

The three crafting skills form a loop. Alchemy brews Fortify Enchanting potions; drinking one lets you enchant stronger Fortify Alchemy gear; wearing that gear brews stronger Fortify Smithing potions; a Fortify Smithing potion plus enchanted Fortify Smithing apparel lets you temper equipment far past its normal quality. Each pass raises the next by a fixed, bounded amount, so one or two honest cycles produce endgame gear without any exploit.

Why it matters

  • This loop is how a mid-tier armour set reaches the armour cap and how a favourite weapon stays viable forever.
  • Alchemy is also the money engine: potion value funds trainers, houses, and materials for the rest of the loop.

How each skill levels

Key mechanics

  • The matching Smithing material perk (e.g. Ebony Smithing for Ebony gear) lets you improve those items twice as much; it matters more than a few extra skill points. Arcane Blacksmith is needed to improve enchanted gear.
  • Fortify effects that feed the loop: Fortify Smithing comes from Blisterwort, Glowing Mushroom, Sabre Cat Tooth, and Spriggan Sap; Fortify Enchanting from Snowberries, Blue Butterfly Wing, Hagraven Claw, and Spriggan Sap.
  • Only one Fortify potion of a given type works at a time, and potion effects are a short timer, so line up the workstation before drinking.

  • Chasing the Fortify Restoration loop. It spirals to absurd numbers and is an exploit; the honest cycle already overshoots what any achievement route needs.

One-Handed, Two-Handed, and Archery XP are based on the base damage of the weapon on each hit that lands on a valid target. Tempering, enchantments, Fortify effects, power-attack bonuses, sneak multipliers, and arrow quality all help you kill, but none of them raise XP per hit. A heavier-base weapon therefore levels the skill faster even when a lighter enchanted one kills faster.

Why it matters

  • It explains the counter-intuitive training advice: swing the big base-damage weapon at durable targets, and save the optimised enchanted blade for fights that matter.
  • It stops wasted effort: grinding with a legendary-tempered weapon levels no faster than the plain version of the same weapon.

Key mechanics

  • Valid target means one whose health can be damaged; hitting invulnerable or friendly targets teaches nothing.
  • Horkers are classic training targets: slow, harmless, and heavy on health. Essential characters that cannot die also work.
  • Enhanced crossbows (the Dawnguard Ancient Technology upgrade line) ignore 50% of a target's armour; regular crossbows do not. That is a damage property, not an XP one.
  • Every skill also has five free levels available instantly from skill books scattered across the world; a skill-book detour is often worth more than an hour of grinding.

Common mistakes

  • Training with a fast dagger for more hits per second; base damage per hit is so low that heavier weapons still win per minute.
  • Buying Fortify One-Handed gear expecting faster levelling; it changes kill speed only.
  • Sneak-attack grinding for weapon XP; the multiplier does not multiply the XP, only the damage.

For Zaria-do

Base damage drives XP, so her training bow is the heaviest she owns while her working bow is the tempered one. Dagger kills level One-Handed slowly (low base damage), which is fine: Sneak is what her dagger is really training, at 12x.

Why it matters

  • Money is the quiet constraint on everything: training sessions, houses, materials, horses. Speech is the skill that closes the loop from crafted goods back to gold.
  • Successful Persuade, Bribe, and Intimidate attempts each raise the skill, and one of each is also an achievement, so bank them deliberately.

Key mechanics

  • Persuade depends solely on Speech skill against the check's threshold; temporary Fortify Speech (Amulet of Dibella, a shrine blessing, gear) push a marginal check over the line.
  • Bribes scale with a gold formula, so they are the fallback when the skill is not there; they also raise Speech on success.
  • Merchant gold is limited per merchant and restocks on a timer; Investor and Master Trader perks raise it if selling volume outgrows the base pools.

Practical examples

  • Sell enchanted-dagger and potion batches across a city's merchants in one loop; the trade volume levels Speech while emptying inventory.
  • Before a hard persuade, stack a Fortify Speech potion with an Amulet of Dibella rather than reloading the conversation.
  • Keep a few hundred gold spare for bribes; a failed persuade often still offers the bribe line.

Common mistakes

  • Spending perk points deep into the Speech tree when the route only needs occasional checks; gear and blessings cover the gaps for free.
  • Selling everything to one merchant and losing value when their gold runs dry; spread the loop.
  • Missing that bribing guards to clear small bounties needs the perk (Bribery), while quest-dialogue bribes do not.

For Zaria-do

Fence limits shape her economy more than merchant gold: Guild progress raises fence capacity, and Speech grows from selling the poison bench's output. One saved Persuade, Bribe, and Intimidate is professional courtesy.

Killing a target under a Soul Trap effect fills an empty soul gem of sufficient size. Filled gems fuel new enchantments and recharge existing ones. Creature souls range petty to grand; humanoid souls are always grand-sized but only fit black soul gems or the Black Star. Azura's Star and the Black Star are reusable artifact gems: fill, spend, repeat, forever.

Why it matters

  • Enchanting is only as available as your soul supply; a soul routine (trap weapon + reusable star + bought petty gems) removes the bottleneck.
  • Recharging with soul gems gives small-to-moderate Enchanting XP that scales with soul size, so a Soul Trap weapon makes every fight worth a little skill progress.

  • Wasting grand souls on levelling enchants; the XP is identical to a petty soul's.
  • Carrying a bag of empty grand gems while fighting wolves and skeevers; the little souls land in the big gems and devalue them.
  • Missing that black souls (humanoids) never fit ordinary gems; without a black gem or the Black Star they are simply lost.

For Zaria-do

The Black Star fits uncomfortably well: her targets are people. A petty Soul Trap enchant on a backup dagger keeps recharge XP flowing without announcing itself.

Legendary skills

At skill 100 you can make a skill Legendary: it drops back to 15 and refunds its perk points, letting the skill level again and keep feeding character XP. This is how you pass the old level-81 ceiling; crafting skills are the natural candidates because the crafting loop re-levels them quickly.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to stack Well Rested with Lover's Comfort; each sleep grants only the best tier you qualify for.
  • Running the Lover Stone while relying on sleep bonuses; the stone suppresses them (see Standing Stones).

Perks do the heavy lifting on the way there: Juggernaut ranks add up to +100% heavy armour rating, Well Fitted adds 25% for wearing all four heavy pieces, and Matching Set adds another 25% for a matched set. Watch for armour-piercing attacks: Enhanced crossbows ignore 50% of your armour and maces or warhammers in enemy hands can carry the same perks you use, so the cap is not absolute safety.

  • Tempering armour far past the cap. The numbers feel satisfying but do nothing; check the displayed rating against 542/567 first.
