Use this page when a route step mentions a system and you want the deeper explanation: what it is, the verified numbers behind it, and how Hrodvar uses it.
Defence
Armour and Defence CapsPhysical defence, caps, hidden bonuses
Short answer
Your armour rating reduces physical damage only, and that reduction is hard-capped at 80% no matter how high the number climbs. Because each worn armour piece and shield secretly adds +25 that the display does not show, the cap lands at a displayed rating of 542 with four armour pieces plus a shield, or 567 with four pieces and no shield.
Why it matters
- Once you hit the cap, every further point of armour does nothing. Knowing the number tells you exactly when to stop stacking armour and start spending enchantment slots on resistances instead.
- The cap is a fixed displayed number, so once Smithing matures, almost any heavy set can reach it. That frees you to pick armour for looks, theme, and enchantment slots rather than raw rating.
Key mechanics
Perks do the heavy lifting on the way there: Juggernaut ranks add up to +100% heavy armour rating, Well Fitted adds 25% for wearing all four heavy pieces, and Matching Set adds another 25% for a matched set. Watch for armour-piercing attacks: Enhanced crossbows ignore 50% of your armour and maces or warhammers in enemy hands can carry the same perks you use, so the cap is not absolute safety.
Common mistakes
- Tempering armour far past the cap. The numbers feel satisfying but do nothing; check the displayed rating against 542/567 first.
- Ignoring the hidden piece bonus and chasing 667 displayed. You need 542 with a shield, not the internal cap value.
- Assuming armour helps against magic. It reduces physical damage only; elemental and magic damage go straight through (see Resistances).

Hrodvar's whole identity leans on this cap: heavy armour plus shield reaches 542 displayed well before endgame gear exists. Once he is there, every spare enchantment slot goes to frost and magic resistance, and armour choice becomes pure roleplay (Nordic Carved or Ebony suit the oath-warden look).

BlockingShields, bashing, the 85% cap
Short answer
Raising your shield reduces the damage of the blocked hit, capped at 85%. Block reduction applies before armour reduction, so the two multiply: 85% blocked, then 80% of the remainder removed by capped armour, leaves roughly 3% of the original hit getting through. Bashing (attack while blocking) staggers and interrupts many dangerous actions, including power attacks and dragon shout wind-ups.
Why it matters
- For a shield character, block is the difference between tanking a bandit chief's power attack and being staggered into a combo.
- The Elemental Protection perk extends the shield to magic: while blocking, incoming fire, frost, and shock damage is cut by 50%, which is the main tool a no-magic warrior has against dragon breath.
Key mechanics
With 100 Block and all Shield Wall ranks, most shields reach the 85% cap against normal attacks. Power attacks are harder to cap: they need substantial Fortify Block from enchantments or potions on top. Block XP scales with damage actually blocked, so blocking real hits from hard targets levels the skill fastest.
Practical examples
- Dragons: raise the shield through the breath (Elemental Protection halves it), then bash and swing when the head lowers.
- Draugr Deathlords: bash the moment the Disarm shout wind-up starts; the interrupt beats hunting for your weapon mid-fight.
- Training: let giants, Dwarven machines, and Draugr hit the raised shield once you can survive a hit; hard hitters level Block fastest.
Common mistakes
- Holding block permanently. Stamina drains on blocked hits and a drained bar means no bash; drop the shield between swings and keep a stamina food up.
- Expecting the 85% cap against power attacks with no Fortify Block. The cap against power attacks needs enchantment or potion help.
- Forgetting Elemental Protection only works while actively blocking; lower the shield and the 50% elemental cut is gone.
For Hrodvar
Block is Hrodvar's signature skill, not a supplement. Prioritise Shield Wall and Elemental Protection early, fight dragons shield-first, and treat the bash as his answer to Disarm shouts and power attacks. Spellbreaker (from Peryite's quest) adds a ward on block that covers what resistances miss.

ResistancesElemental and magic damage, the 85% caps
Short answer
Armour does nothing against spells, breath, and enchanted hits; resistances are that missing layer. Resist Magic and the three elemental resistances (fire, frost, shock) are each capped at 85% for the player. The cap applies only to you: followers and enemies at 100% are truly immune. Resist Magic reduces all magical damage first, then the matching elemental resistance reduces what remains, so the two multiply.
Why it matters
- Past the armour cap, resistance enchantments are the best use of spare slots; more armour is literally wasted.
- A capped frost resistance turns frost dragons, ice mages, and Solstheim weather from lethal to background noise.

- Frost cap for a Nord: 50% racial + a single Resist Frost enchantment or Blessing of Talos-adjacent gear closes the remaining 35% easily.
- Magic resistance: Lord Stone 25% + Agent of Mara 15% + one Resist Magic enchantment approaches the cap without touching Alteration.

Common mistakes
- Stacking one resistance past 85%; the excess does nothing, spread to another element instead.
- Confusing Resist Magic with elemental resists. They are separate pools that multiply; a mix beats piling everything into one.
- Forgetting poison and disease are not covered by any of these; they have their own resistances.

Craft and economy
The Crafting LoopSmithing, Enchanting, Alchemy, and how they feed each other
Short answer
The three crafting skills form a loop. Alchemy brews Fortify Enchanting potions; drinking one lets you enchant stronger Fortify Alchemy gear; wearing that gear brews stronger Fortify Smithing potions; a Fortify Smithing potion plus enchanted Fortify Smithing apparel lets you temper equipment far past its normal quality. Each pass raises the next by a fixed, bounded amount, so one or two honest cycles produce endgame gear without any exploit.
Why it matters
- This loop is how a mid-tier armour set reaches the armour cap and how a favourite weapon stays viable forever.
- Alchemy is also the money engine: potion value funds trainers, houses, and materials for the rest of the loop.
How each skill levels
Key mechanics
- The matching Smithing material perk (e.g. Ebony Smithing for Ebony gear) lets you improve those items twice as much; it matters more than a few extra skill points. Arcane Blacksmith is needed to improve enchanted gear.
- Fortify effects that feed the loop: Fortify Smithing comes from Blisterwort, Glowing Mushroom, Sabre Cat Tooth, and Spriggan Sap; Fortify Enchanting from Snowberries, Blue Butterfly Wing, Hagraven Claw, and Spriggan Sap.
- Only one Fortify potion of a given type works at a time, and potion effects are a short timer, so line up the workstation before drinking.
- Extra Effect (Enchanting 100) puts two enchantments on one item, which is how one set carries armour, resistances, and Fortify effects together.
The cycle, in order
- Level Alchemy and brew Fortify Enchanting potions.
- Drink one, then enchant Fortify Alchemy apparel (head, hands, ring, amulet).
- Wearing that set, brew stronger Fortify Smithing and Fortify Enchanting potions.
- Enchant Fortify Smithing apparel, drink a Fortify Smithing potion, and temper the final weapon, shield, and armour in one session.
Common mistakes
- Chasing the Fortify Restoration loop. It spirals to absurd numbers and is an exploit; the honest cycle already overshoots what any achievement route needs.
- Levelling Enchanting with expensive enchantments. XP per craft is flat, so grand-soul masterpieces level no faster than petty-soul daggers.
- Tempering before the material perk. Improving Ebony without Ebony Smithing wastes half the improvement.
- Brewing cheap potions for XP. Value drives Alchemy XP; Giant's Toe + Wheat + Creep Cluster class recipes level and pay dramatically faster.

The loop is Hrodvar's quiet second life between campaigns. He runs it honestly: one or two cycles, no Fortify Restoration, which still overshoots everything the 75-achievement route needs. Alchemy profit funds his houses and training; Extra Effect puts armour and resistance on the same pieces.

Soul Gems and Soul TrapFuel for Enchanting; creature vs black souls
Short answer
Killing a target under a Soul Trap effect fills an empty soul gem of sufficient size. Filled gems fuel new enchantments and recharge existing ones. Creature souls range petty to grand; humanoid souls are always grand-sized but only fit black soul gems or the Black Star. Azura's Star and the Black Star are reusable artifact gems: fill, spend, repeat, forever.
Why it matters
- Enchanting is only as available as your soul supply; a soul routine (trap weapon + reusable star + bought petty gems) removes the bottleneck.
- Recharging with soul gems gives small-to-moderate Enchanting XP that scales with soul size, so a Soul Trap weapon makes every fight worth a little skill progress.
Key mechanics
- A soul fills the smallest available gem that fits it in most cases, but undersized captures waste soul value; carrying mostly the sizes you need keeps captures efficient.
- Crafted-enchantment XP is flat per item regardless of soul used, so spend petty souls on levelling batches and keep grand souls for real gear.
- The Black Star accepts humanoid (black) souls, which are grand-sized and everywhere; that makes it strictly more convenient than Azura's Star for a character who fights people.
- Dragon souls are a separate currency entirely: they unlock shout words and are not used for enchanting (see Shouts).
Practical examples
- Carry one weapon with a low-magnitude Soul Trap enchant; tag a target before the killing blow, and recharge your main weapon after the fight for XP.
- Buy out petty and lesser gems from court wizards for cheap enchanting batches; they restock.
- Fill the Black Star during any bandit clearing, then temper your enchanting session around one guaranteed grand soul.
Common mistakes
- Wasting grand souls on levelling enchants; the XP is identical to a petty soul's.
- Carrying a bag of empty grand gems while fighting wolves and skeevers; the little souls land in the big gems and devalue them.
- Missing that black souls (humanoids) never fit ordinary gems; without a black gem or the Black Star they are simply lost.

Short answer
Speech covers two systems: dialogue checks and prices. Persuade succeeds or fails against your Speech skill alone; Bribe needs a formula-set amount of gold, not skill; Intimidate is its own check. Prices are set by Speech first, then perks and Fortify Barter effects. Selling the crafting loop's output levels Speech naturally, no grinding needed.
Why it matters
- Money is the quiet constraint on everything: training sessions, houses, materials, horses. Speech is the skill that closes the loop from crafted goods back to gold.
- Successful Persuade, Bribe, and Intimidate attempts each raise the skill, and one of each is also an achievement, so bank them deliberately.
Key mechanics
- Persuade depends solely on Speech skill against the check's threshold; temporary Fortify Speech (Amulet of Dibella, a shrine blessing, gear) push a marginal check over the line.
- Bribes scale with a gold formula, so they are the fallback when the skill is not there; they also raise Speech on success.
- Merchant gold is limited per merchant and restocks on a timer; Investor and Master Trader perks raise it if selling volume outgrows the base pools.
Practical examples
- Sell enchanted-dagger and potion batches across a city's merchants in one loop; the trade volume levels Speech while emptying inventory.
- Before a hard persuade, stack a Fortify Speech potion with an Amulet of Dibella rather than reloading the conversation.
- Keep a few hundred gold spare for bribes; a failed persuade often still offers the bribe line.

- Spending perk points deep into the Speech tree when the route only needs occasional checks; gear and blessings cover the gaps for free.
- Selling everything to one merchant and losing value when their gold runs dry; spread the loop.

Shouts and Word WallsA second toolkit that costs no magicka
Short answer
Shouts are three-word powers fuelled by a cooldown rather than magicka. You learn a word by approaching a word wall (or from quest characters), then spend one absorbed dragon soul to unlock it. Because the cost is time, not a resource bar, a pure warrior loses nothing by shouting constantly.
Why it matters
- Shouts are the warrior's answer to problems steel cannot solve: gap-closing casters, crowds, retreats, and armoured bosses.
- The route's shout achievements (learning all words of one shout, 20 shouts learned, 20 dragon souls absorbed) fall out naturally if you bank word walls as you travel instead of making special trips.
Key mechanics
- The main quest hands you around 15 words unlocked for free; the rest of the map's words need dragon souls, roughly 44 more for everything.
- Each extra word of a shout deepens the effect and usually lengthens the cooldown; you choose per cast how many words to release by how long you hold the button.
- Only one shout cooldown exists; a long shout locks out the quick utility ones until it recovers.
A warrior's picks
Common mistakes
- Hoarding dragon souls with words left locked; a locked word does nothing, and souls keep coming from bounty-letter lairs.
- Always releasing all three words; the full cooldown often is not worth it when one word of Unrelenting Force staggers just as usefully.
- Skipping word walls in cleared dungeons; the wall's word is part of that dungeon's loot, treat it like the boss chest.

Standing StonesSwappable passives; one active at a time
Short answer
Standing stones are free, swappable passive abilities scattered across the map. Activate one and it stays until you activate another. The Aetherial Crown (Dawnguard, forged from Aetherium) is the exception: it stores a second stone, so two can be active together.
Why it matters
- The right stone at the right phase is a free 15-20% levelling speed, +50 armour, or weightless armour; swapping costs nothing but the walk.
- The Lover Stone carries a hidden trade: while it is active you cannot gain any sleep bonus, so its flat +15% competes with Well Rested or Lover's Comfort rather than stacking on top.
The stones that matter for most routes
Practical examples
- Levelling broadly through crafting: Lover Stone, since Smithing (Warrior), Alchemy (Thief), and Enchanting (Mage) span all three Guardian groups.
- Sleeping near a spouse every night: a Guardian stone + Lover's Comfort (1.20 x 1.15) beats the Lover Stone for that group's skills.
- Endgame: park on the Lord Stone (or store it in the Aetherial Crown) once levelling matters less than survivability.
Common mistakes
- Running the Lover Stone and sleeping for a bonus that never arrives; the stone suppresses it.
- Forgetting the Warrior Stone covers Smithing but not Archery when planning a training session.
- Never swapping. The stones are designed to be phase-appropriate; the level-1 pick is rarely the level-40 pick.

Short answer
Every skill increase feeds your character level, and increases in higher skill levels contribute more, so a skill climbing through the 80s and 90s levels you far faster than one in the 20s. Use is the engine (each skill has its own XP model), sleep and standing-stone bonuses are the multiplier, paid trainers are the shortcut, and Legendary resets let the climb continue indefinitely.
Sleep bonuses (tiers of one bonus, not a stack)
Paid training
- Up to five paid trainings per character level; unused sessions do not bank, so spend them every level.
- Trainers stop at skill 90; the last ten points come from use, skill books, or quest rewards.
- Cost scales with the skill level being bought; common-to-master trainers cover every skill, and follower-trainers (Farkas for Heavy Armor, Aela for Archery) can train you and then hold their own fee as a follower.
Legendary skills
At skill 100 you can make a skill Legendary: it drops back to 15 and refunds its perk points, letting the skill level again and keep feeding character XP. This is how you pass the old level-81 ceiling; crafting skills are the natural candidates because the crafting loop re-levels them quickly.
Common mistakes
- Trying to stack Well Rested with Lover's Comfort; each sleep grants only the best tier you qualify for.
- Running the Lover Stone while relying on sleep bonuses; the stone suppresses them (see Standing Stones).
- Making a combat skill Legendary mid-game; you lose real fighting power, unlike a crafting skill that re-levels at a workbench.
- Forgetting the five training sessions in a level where you had spare gold; they are gone at level-up.

Weapon Skill XPWhat actually levels combat skills
Short answer
One-Handed, Two-Handed, and Archery XP are based on the base damage of the weapon on each hit that lands on a valid target. Tempering, enchantments, Fortify effects, power-attack bonuses, sneak multipliers, and arrow quality all help you kill, but none of them raise XP per hit. A heavier-base weapon therefore levels the skill faster even when a lighter enchanted one kills faster.
Why it matters
- It explains the counter-intuitive training advice: swing the big base-damage weapon at durable targets, and save the optimised enchanted blade for fights that matter.
- It stops wasted effort: grinding with a legendary-tempered weapon levels no faster than the plain version of the same weapon.
Key mechanics
- Valid target means one whose health can be damaged; hitting invulnerable or friendly targets teaches nothing.
- Horkers are classic training targets: slow, harmless, and heavy on health. Essential characters that cannot die also work.
- Enhanced crossbows (the Dawnguard Ancient Technology upgrade line) ignore 50% of a target's armour; regular crossbows do not. That is a damage property, not an XP one.
- Every skill also has five free levels available instantly from skill books scattered across the world; a skill-book detour is often worth more than an hour of grinding.
Common mistakes
- Training with a fast dagger for more hits per second; base damage per hit is so low that heavier weapons still win per minute.
- Buying Fortify One-Handed gear expecting faster levelling; it changes kill speed only.
- Sneak-attack grinding for weapon XP; the multiplier does not multiply the XP, only the damage.

The quiet work
Stealth and DetectionHow enemies see and hear you
Short answer
Enemies compute a detection value from the light on you, direct line of sight, your distance, your movement speed, and your noise, with equipped armour weight feeding the noise term. Your Sneak skill does not make you quieter or darker; it reduces how good the noticer effectively is. That framing tells you what actually works: shadows, distance, slow movement, and Muffle beat any amount of crouching in torchlight.
Why it matters
- Every stealth playstyle, an unarmoured assassin or a muffled warrior, rises and falls on the same detection inputs; learn them once and every infiltration in the game becomes legible.
- Understanding what each tool cancels (Muffle: noise; Invisibility: sight; shadows: light) stops you wasting perks and enchantments on the wrong problem.
Key mechanics
- Detection inputs: light on you, line of sight (a defined vision cone), distance (attenuates sharply), movement speed, equipped armour weight (noise), and the sounds of spells, shouts, and weapon swings.
- Your Sneak skill and the Stealth perks reduce the noticer's effective skill, not your sound or visual signature.
- Muffled Movement (Sneak 30) halves armour noise; Silence (Sneak 70) removes walking and running from detection entirely. A Muffle enchantment on boots does the same job for one enchanting session.
- Invisibility is powerful but only blinds: enemies still hear you, and interacting with anything (attacking, looting, opening a door) breaks the effect.
- The glow of a readied spell in your hands makes you more visible; enchantment auras do not.
- Pickpocket chance is displayed but capped at 90%; nothing pushes past it, so a 10% failure risk always exists. Item weight, gold value, target awareness, and Fortify Pickpocket feed the displayed number.
Practical examples
- Interior jobs: walk, never run; hug shadows; wait for patrol gaps at corners; douse or avoid lit braziers rather than fighting the light.
- Heavy or noisy gear: muffled boots plus patience makes even a warrior serviceable at night work; Ebony Mail (from Boethiah's quest) carries a built-in muffle.
- Pickpocket training: many light items from sleeping or isolated targets beats one heavy prize; save before anything expensive.
- Trainer trick: gold paid to a trainer who can be pickpocketed can be lifted back, a legitimate mechanic that suits a shadow-network roleplay.
Common mistakes
- Buying damage perks to fix detection; noise and light are the problem, and Muffle and shadows solve them.
- Treating Invisibility as silence; a potion mid-combat does nothing about the noise you make sprinting.
- Trusting a 90% pickpocket chance as safe; over ten lifts, a failure is expected. Save first.
- Sneaking with a shout or spell mid-fight and wondering why everyone turned; casting noise is a detection input.

Hrodvar is the proof that a warrior does not need a second character for the Guild and Brotherhood questlines: he does not take the armour off, he adds Muffle.
